Literacy Lift Off
Tagann an Literacy Lift Off ón gclár Reading Recovery. An rud is fearr faoin gclár seo ná go gcabhraíonn sé le gach páiste sa rang∕ scoil. Tá an t-ádh leis an scoil go bhfuil múinteoir againn atá cáilithe mar mhúinteoir Reading Recovery agus gur tugadh faoi a leathnú trí Ghaeilge agus Béarla ar leibhéal uile scoile. Thosaigh an scoil leis an gcóras LLO trí Bhéarla i Rang 1 agus Naíonáin Mhóra i 2010-2011, ansin le Naíonáin Mhóra- Rang 6 i 2011-2012. Is i 2012-2013 gur thosaigh muid ar an LLO trí Ghaeilge le Naíonáin Mhóra- Rang 6 agus leanamar leis an LLO Béarla le Naíonáin Mhóra- Rang 1 don bhliain chéanna.
Cad atá i gceist le LLO?
Is ceacht 40 – 50 nóiméad a chuirtear ar fáil gach lá de théarma iomlán é an LLO. Bíonn na ceachtanna ar siúl gach lá i seomra ranga na bpáistí. Le linn na gceachtanna bíonn cúpla múinteoir ag obair ar stáisiúin dhifriúla ar na réimsí seo leanas: léitheoireacht – idir ábhar atá léite cheana agus ábhar úr, scríbhneoireacht - abairtí agus focail a bhriseadh suas agus a chur ar ais le chéile arís, gramadach agus obair ó bhéal. Bogann na páistí ar aghaidh ó stáisiún go stáisiún le cleachtadh agus dul chun cinn a dhéanamh i ngach réimse. Bíonn 4/5 páiste ag suí ag gach grúpa difriúil roghnaithe de réir thorthaí na scrúdaithe Reading Recovery.
Bíonn fillteán an duine ag dul abhaile leis na páistí gach lá scoile ón Luan go dtí an Aoine. Bíonn dhá leabhar léitheoireachta agus cóipleabhar scríbhneoireachta agus obair ghreamaithe sna fillteáin. Is féidir an obair scríbhneoireachta a chleachtadh sa bhaile chomh maith. Cuireann sé seo go mór le foghlaim iomlán an pháiste. Mar sin, an t-aon obair bhaile a bheidh i gceist ná léitheoireacht agus más mian leis an tuismitheoir féin suí síos agus abairt nua a chumadh leis an bpáiste tá fáilte roimhe nó is féidir an páiste féin a chur ag athscríobh an abairt céanna ón scoil.
Tá buíochas mór ag dul don scoil agus an pobal a chuir an t-airgead ar fáil chun na leabhair a théann leis an gclár seo a cheannach. Tá 3,000 + leabhair ceannaithe agus táimid ag cur leis seo an t-am ar fad. Tá buíochas ar leith ag dul do thuismitheoirí a chur clúdaigh ar na leabhair seo chomh maith!
Déanfar na leabhair a mhalartú agus a athrú gach lá. Tá sé an-tábhachtach, mar sin, go dtugann gach páiste aire mhaith do na leabhair agus gach rud sna fillteáin. Sa chás go gcailltear leabhar nó má scriostar aon leabhar gearrfar costas €5 an leabhair ar na tuismitheoirí. Seachas sin, ní bheimid in ann ligint do na páistí leabhair a thabhairt abhaile leo.
Iarrtar ar na tuismitheoirí a chinntiú go bhfuil a páiste ar scoil gach lá ionas go bhfuil siad ag dreapadh an dréimire ag luas feiliúnach don ghrúpa ina bhfuil siad.
*** Nóta beag: Is féidir le rang amháin a bheith i mbun Literacy Lift Off Gaeilge agus Béarla in aon téarma amháin uaireanta, mar sin, bíonn dhá leabhar Gaeilge agus dhá leabhar Béarla ag dul abhaile in aghaidh na hoíche. Níl aon bhrú an ceithre leabhar a léamh ach moltar más féidir cinntiú go bhfuil ar a laghad leabhair amháin Béarla agus leabhar amháin Gaeilge léite gach oíche. Bíonn laghdú ar an obair bhaile don rang sin, don téarma atá i gceist , de bharr seo. Ach cuirtear na tuismitheoirí ar an eol roimh ré tríd litir ón scoil.

What is Literacy Lift Off?
Literacy Lift Off is essentially a spin-off of the reading recovery programme. The great thing about this programme is that it helps every child within the school . The school is extremely lucky to have a qualified Reading Recovery teacher who has undergone the broadening of this programme through Irish and English on a whole school basis.
A LLO lesson is a 40-50 minute lesson given each day for an entire term. The lessons take place each day in the children’s own classroom. The program involves a number of teachers working from different stations on the following skills: Reading – both familiar and new, Writing - Sentences, word work, taking words apart and putting them back together again, grammar and oral work. The children move from station to station in order to practise and to progress in each of these skills. There will be 4/5 children at each group station. The groups were selected through Reading Recovery tests.
Each Child will have their own folder which they will take home with them each Monday to Friday. Each folder will include two reading books, a sentence book and a cut-up sentence book. They may practice the written work at home as well as at school. Therefore, the only homework that is required is the reading. If the parent ∕ guardian ∕ minder can provide the time to sit down and compose a new sentence with their child, they are more than welcome or the child can re-write the sentence which was done at school independently.
I huge thanks to the school and it’s community for providing the funding for this programme. This funding has covered the cost of the purchase of 3,000 + books and we are adding to it daily. A massive thanks must also be given to the parents who have helped put contact on all these books also!
The books will be swapped and changed each day. It is very important that all children take good care of the books and all the material sent home in the folders. If any of the books go missing or are damaged in anyway the school will be obliged to impose a charge of €5 per book on parents, otherwise no more books can be sent home.
The parents are asked to ensure, where possible, that their child is present every day for these lessons to ensure they climb the ladder at the relevant speed of their given group.
*** A little note Occasionally - Literacy Lift Off will run in Irish and English for a certain class for the entire term, therefore, there will be two Irish books and two English books going home nightly. There is no pressure to read all four books but, it is recommended, if at all possible to try to read at least one Irish book and one English book, as this will benefit the child’s own progression. There will be a notable cut in class homework for such a class, during the given term, due to this. The Parents are notified of this, beforehand ,through a school letter.
